The leopard had reportedly been stuck for hours when rescuers arrived. With the animal frightened and potentially dangerous, the rescue team first used a tranquilizer dart to safely sedate her.

Then veterinarian Dr. Bijoy Gogoi did something extraordinary.

Once the leopard was unconscious, Gogoi climbed down into the dark well to reach her. At the bottom, he carefully secured a rope harness around the powerful animal so she could be lifted safely to the surface.

It was a delicate operation. One mistake could have put both the veterinarian and the leopard at risk.

With Gogoi guiding the process from below, bystanders helped pull the leopard upward. After roughly two hours, the exhausted animal was finally brought out of the deep well and back onto solid ground.

Despite the ordeal, the leopard appeared to have escaped without serious injuries.

She was taken to the Assam State Zoo, where she could be examined and cared for following her frightening experience.

For the rescuers, the mission wasn’t about conquering a wild animal—it was about giving a frightened creature trapped in an impossible situation another chance.

And for one veterinarian, that meant climbing 30 feet into the darkness to make sure the leopard didn’t have to face the danger alone.
