A 400-pound black bear had wandered into a residential area in Alligator Point, Florida, after following the smell of food. But what began as a search for an easy meal quickly turned into a life-threatening situation.

The bear had traveled from the Osceola National Forest and was discovered searching through residential garbage. Wildlife authorities arrived to capture the animal and return it safely to the forest.
But during the operation, something went terribly wrong.
The frightened bear ended up in the water and began struggling. A powerful 400-pound animal was suddenly in danger of drowning, creating an extremely difficult situation for everyone nearby.
Then Warwick saw what was happening.
Knowing there was little time to react, he entered the water and began working to bring the struggling bear toward shore. It was an incredibly dangerous task—the animal was frightened, exhausted and far too powerful to handle casually.
Warwick stayed as calm as possible and continued pulling the bear closer to land.
Eventually, the massive animal was brought back to safety.
What started with a bear simply following its nose toward a tempting smell had suddenly become a desperate rescue in the water. And without Warwick’s quick decision to act, the outcome could have been very different.
The 400-pound bear survived the ordeal and was given another chance to return to the wild.
