Four Giant Armored Mammals the Size of Cars Unearthed in Argentina

Imagine discovering an animal the size of a small car hidden beneath an ordinary riverbed. In Argentina, a farmer made an extraordinary find when four fossilized shells belonging to giant, extinct mammals emerged from the dried earth—offering a rare glimpse into South America’s Ice Age past.

The fossils belong to glyptodonts, prehistoric relatives of modern armadillos that roamed the continent thousands of years ago. Unlike today’s small, burrowing armadillos, these enormous mammals carried massive, dome-shaped armor that protected their bodies.

The largest glyptodonts could reach approximately 3 meters (10 feet) in length and weigh more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds)—roughly comparable in size to a Volkswagen Beetle.

The four shells were discovered in a dried riverbed near Buenos Aires and are now being investigated by researchers from the Institute of Archaeological and Palaeontological Investigations of the Pampa Quaternary (INIPQUA).

What makes the discovery especially intriguing is that all four animals appear to have been preserved at the same location. Researchers believe the group may have included two adults and two younger individuals. Most of the shells were also oriented in a similar direction, prompting questions about what the animals might have been doing before they died.

Scientists hope further analysis will help establish their precise age, sex and possible cause of death. For now, the fossils are estimated to be around 20,000 years old.

Recovering the enormous shells will require heavy machinery because of their substantial weight. Even so, the effort could be worthwhile: nearly complete glyptodont carapaces are rarely discovered, making this cluster particularly valuable.

The find could help researchers reconstruct the Ice Age ecosystem of the region—and perhaps uncover clues about the lives of these extraordinary armored giants that once roamed South America.
