In north-eastern India, amidst the bustling forests and tea gardens, two orphaned baby elephants, Rupa and Aashi, were struggling to survive. Separated from their mothers soon after birth, they faced a world of cold concrete floors, fear, and uncertainty. Rupa, just three months old, had tumbled down a steep ravine, leaving her trapped and injured, while Aashi, eleven months old, was abandoned in a tea garden trench. Both carried deep physical and emotional wounds.

Enter Dr. Panjit Basumatary, a compassionate wildlife veterinarian at the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) rescue centre. Observing the calves’ discomfort and sleepless nights, he devised a heartwarming solution: cozy pyjamas, socks, and blankets to help them retain warmth and feel secure. What might seem a simple gesture for humans became a lifeline for these tiny giants, helping them sleep peacefully for the first time since their traumatic separation.
Wrapped snugly together, Rupa and Aashi rested side by side, their trembling bodies finally relaxed. The pyjamas not only provided physical warmth but also a sense of comfort and safety that had been missing since their early days. Keepers noticed immediate improvements — the calves were calmer, healthier, and more willing to interact, showing subtle signs of joy that had once seemed lost.

Dr. Basumatary emphasized the importance of regulating body temperature and providing gentle care for orphaned elephants. “These young elephants need more than just food,” he explained. “They need reassurance, warmth, and human support to begin healing from trauma.”
Rupa, with a previously dislocated leg, is steadily recovering and will eventually be reintroduced into the wild. Aashi, who suffered severe dehydration and stress, is also showing progress. Their journey symbolizes hope — a testament to human compassion and the power of small gestures in nurturing the most vulnerable creatures.
Through blankets, pyjamas, and endless patience, Rupa and Aashi are learning to trust again, proving that even in the aftermath of loss and hardship, care and kindness can help heal the deepest wounds.
