What began as just another day at Dallas Cowboys training camp quickly turned into one of the most emotional moments of the preseason — a moment that reminded everyone in the building that football is family.

Early Tuesday morning, just hours before team walkthroughs, the Cowboys learned that longtime equipment staffer Mark “Big Red” Delaney had passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at the age of 52.

Delaney, a 22-year veteran of the Cowboys organization, was more than just a staffer — he was a friend, a mentor, and a constant source of humor and positivity for players and coaches alike.

😔 “He Was the Heartbeat of Our Locker Room”

“He never missed a day. Never had a bad attitude. Always made you laugh,” said one former Cowboys player. “You’d be surprised how much a guy like that holds the team together.”

Players described Delaney as the man who taped your cleats, cleaned your gloves, and lifted your mood when you had a bad practice.

Dak Prescott, who’s worked with Delaney for 8 seasons, was particularly shaken.

Minutes before the team took the field for warmups, Dak gathered the entire offense, coaches included, and stepped into the center of the locker room.

Without a microphone, and with visible emotion in his voice, he said:

“If you’ve ever had Mark do something for you — clean your locker, find you a towel, fix your cleats — take that memory and hold it tight today. Because this one’s for him.”

Then, in full gear, Dak walked silently to Delaney’s equipment station, placed his helmet on the bench, and knelt in prayer.

One by one, nearly every player followed — some leaving gloves, some tapping the station with a fist, others wiping tears from their eyes.

The practice continued, but without music. Coaches removed speakers from the field. There was no yelling. No celebration. Just focused, quiet work — and an unspoken tribute on every rep.

“Mark would’ve hated a pity party,” said Head Coach Mike McCarthy. “So we worked — but we worked for him.”

🙌 Plans for a Tribute

Team officials confirmed that the Cowboys will wear a “Big Red” helmet decal this preseason and plan to dedicate one home game in his honor.

More than that, players have already started a fund in Delaney’s name to support team support staff families during health emergencies — a gesture Dak is helping lead.
