SAN FRANCISCO — Some NFL careers end with a final tackle, a final walk off the field and eventually a quiet announcement that the game is over. But for NaVorro Bowman, there was always something meaningful about making sure his story ended where so much of his legacy was created.
The former All-Pro linebacker returned to the San Francisco 49ers to sign a ceremonial one-day contract, allowing him to officially retire as a member of the franchise. Ask longtime fans for their favorite Bowman memory and many will immediately return to December 23, 2013.
The 49ers were playing the Atlanta Falcons in the final regular-season game ever held at Candlestick Park. With San Francisco trying to protect a late lead, Bowman intercepted a deflected Matt Ryan pass and raced 89 yards for a touchdown.
Candlestick erupted.
The play became known as the “Pick at the Stick,” one of the most memorable moments from the stadium’s final chapter. It wasn’t merely a great defensive play; it felt almost scripted, with one of San Francisco’s defensive leaders providing the unforgettable moment that helped close one of the NFL’s most historic venues.
For many fans, that play alone guaranteed Bowman would never be forgotten.
Then Came the Moment That Tested Everything
Bowman’s career also contained adversity that went far beyond wins and losses.
During the NFC Championship Game following the 2013 season, Bowman suffered a devastating knee injury while making a play near the goal line against the Seattle Seahawks. The injury forced him to miss the entire following season and created serious questions about whether he could ever return to the player he had been.
Bowman answered those questions the way he had answered so many challenges throughout his career.
He worked.
He returned.
And remarkably, he became an elite linebacker again.
