A sea otter pup just one day old was left orphaned and fighting for survival after a devastating killer whale attack off the coast of Alaska.
The heartbreaking incident happened near Homer on September 9, when Natalie Hunter, a lab technician with the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC), was fishing with friends and witnessed an extraordinary scene unfolding in the water.
The group initially spotted two killer whales and a sea otter floating on the surface. They soon realized the otter was carrying a tiny pup.
Then the water erupted.
The killer whales repeatedly attacked the mother and her newborn, with enormous tail strikes sending the animals flying out of the water. The witnesses quickly realized they were seeing transient orcas — a population known to prey on marine mammals.
The tiny pup cried out as the attack continued.
At one point, the mother failed to resurface. The orcas eventually disappeared, leaving the newborn alone on the surface of the water.
For a pup believed to be no more than a day old, survival without its mother would have been almost impossible. Newborn sea otters depend heavily on their mothers for warmth, protection and care.
Fortunately, the group did not leave the helpless animal behind.
The newborn was rescued and brought into the care of the Alaska SeaLife Center, which frequently responds to reports of abandoned sea otter pups.
From witnessing the loss of its mother to receiving a chance at life, the tiny otter’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly the wild can change — and how one rescue can make all the difference.
