Tezpur, Assam – In a heart-wrenching scene that left witnesses in tears, a three-month-old elephant calf showed extraordinary courage to save its mother after both fell into a 20-foot-deep ditch while moving with a herd of nearly 100 elephants.

Early that morning, the adult mother elephant slipped into the deep trench, sustaining serious injuries and losing consciousness. Without hesitation, the tiny calf began nudging and pushing her with all its strength, desperately trying to awaken her and prevent her from succumbing to the fall.
Local villagers, alarmed by the distressing sight, immediately contacted the forest authorities. A rescue team, including veterinarians and a specially trained “Kumki” elephant, arrived on the scene. Despite repeated attempts to pull the mother out using ropes, the team initially failed. Undeterred, they brought in an excavator to widen the ditch and create a slope, providing a safer path for the injured elephant.

After eight grueling hours, the calf was safely extracted and transferred to Kaziranga National Park for protection, while the mother elephant remained in the ditch under continuous veterinary care. Forest officer Diganta Barooah explained, “We suspect her hind leg may be fractured. She is still in the trench, but we are doing everything possible to save her.”

This story is more than a rescue mission—it is a testament to maternal bonds, courage, and resilience. The image of a tiny calf standing beside its mother in the depths of the ditch captivated hearts worldwide, highlighting the miraculous power of love and devotion in the animal kingdom.
