She looks like she stepped straight out of a storybook — but Ippo is very real.
The adorable youngster is a zonkey, an unusual hybrid born from a zebra and a donkey, and her distinctive appearance has made her a remarkable resident of an animal reserve in Florence, Italy.
Ippo was born after an extraordinary encounter between her parents.
Her father, Martin, was a zebra living in his own enclosure when he managed to jump over the fence. Instead of returning to his enclosure, he wandered into an area housing endangered Amiata donkeys.
There, Martin met a donkey named Giada.
What followed was an extremely rare pairing — and around 12 months later, Giada gave birth to little Ippo.
The young hybrid inherited characteristics from both sides of her unusual family, including the striking striped markings that immediately reveal her zebra heritage.
While hybrids such as zonkeys are uncommon, Ippo’s arrival offers a fascinating example of what can happen when two closely related equine species meet under extraordinary circumstances.
For the staff caring for her, however, Ippo is more than just a scientific curiosity.
She is a one-of-a-kind animal whose very existence began with an unexpected escape, an unlikely meeting and a fence that one determined zebra managed to overcome.
