Early this morning, Brian Moseka witnessed a gruesome scene: a hyena carrying a lion’s limb. After contacting the Mara Predator team, the victim’s identity was confirmed: Lemoniko, the last of the Moniko Boys left standing. Grandson of the legendary nomadic king Jesse, Lemoniko carried in his lineage the heritage of one of the Mara’s great males. After the disappearance of his brothers Kiliya and Lenchada, he had formed an alliance with Orkuret, and together they roamed the plains, even potentially fathering the cubs of the Topi Breakaway Pride. This same morning, Tira Betty found the head of a lion being devoured by hyena cubs, further confirming Lemoniko’s tragic demise, likely in a confrontation with other males. However, due to the ongoing conflict between humans and lions in the reserve, this possibility can never be ruled out. A stark reminder of the constant struggle for survival and power in the Mara. Rest in peace, Limoniko.
