A Life Constricted by a Snare
On a fateful morning, the SWT/KWS Mobile Veterinary Unit received a distress call about an elephant calf trapped in a cruel snare. The brutal wire had severely constricted the calf’s leg, causing agonizing and massive wounds. The tiny elephant had been dragging its body through the dense terrain, the wire cutting deeper with every desperate movement.
However, what truly brought the rescuers to tears was not just the sight of the calf’s pain, but the desperate reaction of the mother. The cow refused to leave her baby. She stood guard, emitting mournful cries and casting eyes filled with pleading and helplessness toward the human team. It was a silent plea for help—an acknowledgement that she needed human intervention to save her calf.
Rescuers’ Tears, Hands of Hope
Moved by the heartbreaking scene, Dr. Poghon and the team acted with incredible precision and bravery. The critical first step was to anesthetize the mother to safely treat the calf. The helicopter pilot skillfully maneuvered the pair into an open area, and the dart found its mark.
As the mother subsided, volunteers quickly moved to the calf. The sight of the thick snare creating a deep, lacerating wound broke the hearts of everyone present. One volunteer later shared, “My eyes welled up seeing the sheer cruelty of that snare. I could feel the mother’s pain through her eyes.”
Following meticulous efforts, the snare was removed. The wound was carefully cleaned, administered with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, and dressed with green clay to aid recovery.
Reunion After 400 Grueling Meters
The final, and most poignant, task was reuniting the baby with its mother. The team bravely carried the calf over 400 meters of challenging, hilly terrain back to its mother. As the sedatives wore off, the cow and calf awoke, sharing an immediate, loving moment before disappearing back into the forest.
