Chained, Broken, But Not Forgotten: Dolo’s Miraculous Second Chance at Life

Chained and Forgotten: Dolo’s Journey from Despair to Dignity

For the first four years of his life, Dolo the lion knew only pain and confinement. Tied to a one-metre chain in a dark, wooden shack in Ethiopia, he lived in isolation—starving, weakened, and stripped of his natural majesty. The heavy chain that imprisoned him also wore away his glorious mane, leaving behind scars both visible and unseen.

When he was finally discovered in 2011, Dolo was a shadow of what a lion should be. Emaciated and heartbroken, his survival was a miracle in itself. He was moved to a temporary safe haven, but his true second chance came when Born Free welcomed him to the Ensessa Kotteh Wildlife Rescue Centre—a sanctuary where healing could finally begin.

There, Dolo’s life was transformed. No longer confined, he breathed fresh air, felt the earth beneath his paws, and for the first time, experienced the care and compassion he had been so cruelly denied. And in a beautiful twist of fate, Dolo was introduced to Safia, a rescued lioness who had her own story of survival. Together, they forged a bond that brought light back into both their lives.

Dolo’s story is one of heartbreak—but also of hope. A powerful reminder of the resilience of wild animals, and the vital importance of rescue, protection, and second chances.
