Who’s Smarter? Tiger Vs. Monkey?

This is the captivating moment a clever monkey narrowly escapes death while trying to save the life of her baby, when they are stalked by a huge tiger in a tree.

Tourists on a safari filmed the stand-off in Ramnagar, India,

The footage shows the tiger coming within inches of its next monkey meal.

Further away footage of the encounter went viral last month, but this newly emerged camera angle gives a breath-taking view of the rare battle.

The monkey ends the face off by quickly scurrying around the tree’s branches, reclaiming the high ground and sending the tiger off-balance.

The big cat clings to a branch to the best of its ability, but ends up humiliated when it drops to the ground, leaving the savvy simian looking down at it from high above.

A World Wildlife Fund report released in April showed that the population of tigers in the wild is now 3,890 in 13 countries across Asia, up from an estimated 3,200 in 2010.

Meanwhile, India – home to the vast majority of these tigers – has 2,226 animals in the wild today, up from 1,706 in 2010, a 30 percent jump.

Some experts have questioned the country counts, saying it’s far too soon to declare victory.

Smaller-scale, more-intensive studies at some reserves in India do show significant local increases, according to K. Ullas Karanth, science director for the Wildlife Conservation Society in Asia.

But a true rebound over wider regions will take time.
