According to law enforcement sources, Boyd — 25 — was shot while leaving a diner with teammates. Police believe he was accidentally near an argument that escalated into violence. “He was not involved — it was just the wrong time, wrong place,” an officer said.

At Bellevue, medical staff fought for nearly three hours to save Boyd’s life. When their last efforts failed, the emergency room fell silent, and sobs could be heard in the hallway where Jets players waited in desperation.

A team source described the scene at the hospital: Robert Saleh hugged Boyd’s mother, both of them shaking silently. A Jets member whispered:
“Kade was the kid who always had the biggest laugh in the locker room… and now we don’t know what to say to each other.”

The NFL released a statement in the middle of the night, expressing “deep sorrow” and confirming that there would be a moment of silence during this weekend’s series. Players across the league — from veterans to rookies — posted tributes on social media, calling Boyd “a spark everyone needed.”

Outside MetLife Stadium, fans began to gather, placing flowers, candles, and Boyd’s No. 36 jersey. Against the overcast New York sky, the wind blew colder than usual — as if the entire city were mourning a young man with so much left to do.

A night of grief, a Jets heart stopped beating — and the NFL will not forget the name Kris Boyd.
