Finding a baby deer alone can be heartbreaking, but sometimes, the little animal may not be abandoned at all. For one tiny fawn discovered wedged beneath a car, however, the situation was far more concerning than it first appeared.

During the first few weeks of life, fawns often stay hidden in vegetation while their mothers leave to search for food. The mother deer usually returns periodically to nurse her baby, so seeing a fawn alone does not necessarily mean it needs to be rescued.
But this little deer wasn’t simply resting in a quiet hiding place. She had become trapped beneath a vehicle, leaving her unable to get free on her own.

McDaniel carefully reached beneath the car, placing gloved hands on the frightened fawn and speaking in a soothing voice to comfort her. Because the tiny animal was wedged in place, lifting her directly wasn’t possible.
Instead, McDaniel gently rolled her onto her side to protect her delicate legs, then slowly worked backward from beneath the vehicle while cradling the fawn in their arms.

The encounter is a reminder that wildlife can sometimes need human help in unexpected situations. At the same time, experts advise people to observe apparently healthy fawns from a distance, since their mothers may be nearby and return when it is safe.
For this little deer, being found under a car meant she needed more than patience. She needed someone to recognize that something was wrong and act carefully to help her.
