Orphaned Hairless Bear Cub Makes an Incredible Recovery After Rescue

When rescuers at Gold Country Wildlife Rescue in North Auburn, California, met a young black bear cub last December, he was in heartbreaking condition. Found alone in El Dorado County, the little bear was struggling to survive, suffering from dehydration, anemia, and a serious skin infection.

Frightened and weak, the cub cowered inside his crate, keeping his gaze lowered toward his oversized paws. His condition was concerning, and although rescuers knew recovery would not be easy, they were determined to give him a chance.

The team carried out a thorough examination and developed a treatment plan to address his medical problems. Slowly, the cub began responding to care. After several weeks, something encouraging became visible: soft fur was starting to grow back around his curious little face.

As more time passed, the rescuers grew increasingly hopeful. The once-fragile cub began showing signs of the playful, curious animal he was meant to be. His recovery was becoming about more than healing his body—he was also rediscovering the world around him.

To encourage natural behaviors, the team provided enrichment activities in his enclosure. He enjoyed exploring a small swimming pool and relaxing in a hammock made from a firehose. These opportunities allowed him to play, investigate, and develop important skills while remaining safely under care.

Just as importantly, rescuers limited direct contact with the cub. Their goal was not to make him comfortable around people, but to preserve his natural instincts and give him the best possible chance of returning to the wild.

His transformation from a frightened, sick cub into a more active and curious young bear offered a hopeful glimpse of what patient wildlife rehabilitation can achieve. For this little survivor, every new patch of fur and every playful moment marked another step toward a healthier future.
