The dinosaur fossils were found during a cloning operation on the BR-153 highway, at km 85, in Mirassol, inland from São Paulo, over the weekend. It is suspected that the material found is that of a titanosaur, a species that lived in the Cretaceous period, known as the last period of the “Age of Dinosaurs”, 80 million years ago.
According to paleontologists, a femur about 80 cm long, a humerus (foreleg bone), a tail vertebra and a dinosaur tooth were found. The fragments were about 10 meters deep and took about 10 hours to remove.
“They were in a ravine that was being excavated. Because they were close together, we believe they all belong to the same animal, except that the tooth was found 30 meters away from the others,” said paleontologist William Nava, who was in charge of the excavation. The Museo Paleontologist de Marília, who helped remove the fossils.
