After spending roughly 50 years in captivity, Raju the Indian elephant was finally freed in a dramatic overnight rescue that moved the conservation team to tears.
Raju, believed to be 73 years old, had endured decades of brutal treatment. He was severely underweight, suffering from badly infected legs, and had spent years in chains with spikes around his feet.
Wildlife SOS founder Kartick Satyanarayan said he had never seen an elephant so badly mistreated.
Raju’s situation had been discovered more than a year before his rescue, but freeing him required months of legal work. The Uttar Pradesh Forest Department eventually obtained a court order allowing the conservation team to take action.
The rescue itself involved dozens of people and was carefully planned. Working through the night, the team gave Raju pain medication and treats while gradually helping him become calm enough for them to loosen the chains and spikes.
Then something unexpected happened.
According to Satyanarayan, Raju appeared to stop fighting the rescuers and began walking gently alongside them toward the waiting truck. He also appeared to shed tears, which his rescuers interpreted as a sign that he understood they were there to help him.
Hours later, Raju arrived at the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura, where the remaining chains and spikes could finally be removed.
In the days that followed, his condition began improving. His infected legs started healing, and he began gaining weight.
After five decades of captivity, Raju was finally beginning a new chapter—one defined not by chains, but by care, freedom and recovery. 🐘❤️
