Orphaned Kangaroo Finds Comfort in a Teddy Bear Best Friend

When Doodlebug was first found abandoned, the tiny eastern grey kangaroo weighed only 3 pounds and was far too young to survive on his own.

He needed care, warmth and plenty of attention. But along the way, Doodlebug found something else that seemed to make his new life a little easier—a soft teddy bear that quickly became his constant companion.

Today, Doodlebug is much healthier, weighing around 26 to 30 pounds. He is even taking the next step toward independence through a process known as a soft release.

That means Doodlebug can explore the nearby forest while still returning home occasionally for extra food and care.

But even as he becomes more independent, he hasn’t forgotten his favorite friend.

According to his caregivers, Doodlebug treats the teddy bear much like a young kangaroo might treat a companion. He lies beside it, cuddles it and even practices his kicking against the soft toy.

For a kangaroo who once arrived weighing just three pounds, his transformation is remarkable.

The goal is for Doodlebug to eventually live fully on his own in the wild. Until then, he has a safe place to return to—and a teddy bear waiting for him whenever he needs a little comfort.

From a fragile orphan who could barely survive to a healthy young kangaroo exploring the forest, Doodlebug’s journey is a beautiful reminder that sometimes even the smallest things can provide enormous comfort.
