Mirror reports that Manchester City are preparing to offer Ballon d’Or winner Rodri a new contract that will keep the Spanish midfielder at the club until 2029.
Rodri, 28, has been in negotiations with City over a new deal for nearly a year. His progress was delayed after rupturing a cruciate ligament in September, which sidelined him until the final week of the season. However, City’s medical team have been impressed by his rapid recovery, and he returned to action as a substitute in the penultimate game. He is now expected to play a significant role in the upcoming Club World Cup.

Currently earning around £200,000 per week, the new contract will see Rodri’s wages rise beyond £300,000 per week, making him City’s second-highest earner behind Erling Haaland. The club’s offer reflects his growing importance and recognition as one of the world’s top defensive midfielders.
Real Madrid have been long-time admirers of Rodri, who began his career at their city rivals Atletico Madrid. The Spanish international scored the winning goal in City’s 2023 Champions League triumph and is widely regarded as the ultimate defensive midfielder.
City’s season was affected by Rodri’s injury during a match against Arsenal, but they managed to secure third place on the final day.
Alongside the contract talks with Rodri, Manchester City are set to complete the £60m signing of AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and are pursuing Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki for around £35m ahead of their trip to the United States.
