Phil Foden has had one good month of form for Manchester City all season – so what has gone wrong after his heroics of 2023/24?

A stop-start season has seen Phil Foden struggle to match his form for Manchester City last year.
It has been a season to forget for Phil Foden and time is running out to turn things around. In truth, that chance might have already gone.

Last season’s Player of the Year by some distance then helped England to the Euro 2024 final, finally finding a role for his country after playing a pivotal role for Manchester City in their four-in-a-row triumph and historic treble the year before. It was the season he stepped up to show everyone he has the mentality to be the main man, not just the supremely-talented kid with potential to do it.

But if 2023/24 was a breakout year, then this season has been a write-off. He spoke of mental burnout after the Euros and barely any rest between the previous few campaigns, and he was not involved in pre-season like his other international teammates to begin the season from a standing start. 45 minutes against Chelsea on the opening day was followed by three games out of action with illness. He didn’t start a game until late September and his first Premier League start was in October.
