They Thought He Was a Fighter — But His Wounds Told a Darker Story of Cruelty and Betrayal

at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter A badly injured dog with a unique smile always arrived . They named him Squish because of his unique face shape . Doctors immediately began stitching his wounds and treating him with a round of antibiotics.

However, his recovery was anything but easy , and subsequent medical examinations showed that his injuries were due to something much more serious . Danielle Boyd, his new owner, shared the grim results:

“Everything pointed to the fact that he had been intentionally hit by a person, as he had no other fractures or injuries that would indicate an accidental trauma such as being hit by a car.”

The shape of his wounds made it impossible for the dog to eat on his own, as he couldn’t open his mouth properly. Given the serious diagnosis, Squish was put on the list of dogs to be euthanized, as he showed no improvement and was beginning to suffer greatly from his poor diet.

However , Danielle was already beginning to form a strong connection with the dog. When Danielle picked him up, the dog seemed very relieved and happy with the human contact . Despite all the damage he suffered and the seriousness of his situation, the dog only seemed to want to give love:

Danielle decided to take Squish home that night so he could have a happy night in a home before being euthanized . Squish proved that despite everything, he had the energy of a hurricane , running nonstop throughout the house until he finally fell asleep. The next day, Danielle decided to stop him from being euthanized and give him a second chance .

He can now eat on his own and lives with Danielle’s family in Texas. He’s a very happy and unique dog thanks to his charming, crooked smile. Squish has proven to be very social, so Danielle has begun training him to work as a therapy dog :

“I want you to visit children with disabilities to remind them that even though they may look different, they are not really disabled .”
