‘He looks so proud!’: Golden retriever brings owner a 3-foot snake
Snake nothing but a hound dog!
A Kansas-based golden retriever has gone viral after its owner recorded a TikTok of the pup bringing a 3-foot-long common garter snake back to his owner.
The TikTok, which was posted in mid-March and has since slithered its way to nearly 840,000 views, shows the 9-month-old puppy named Scout holding a dead snake in his mouth as he attempts to give it to his owner, Casey Newlin.
In the video, Scout can be seen holding a writhing snake and wagging his tail.
“Not your average retriever,” reads the video’s caption. “Apparently he is friends with snakes!
“The first time he brought me the snake it was alive but it was sluggish,” Newlin told Newsweek. “My husband took the snake and let it go but the next day [Scout] brought me the snake in his mouth again when I was getting out of the car.”
Newlin later posted a video of Sout’s second attempt to bring her the snake, though this time it was dead.
“Scout brought me the snake again today,” reads the second video’s caption. “However today it was dead.
According to Newlin, the common garter snake is very … well… common where she and her family resides.

This is not the first time Scout had retrieved some nasty things.
According to Newlin, the common garter snake is very … well… common where she and her family resides.
Newlin recalled that the first time Scout brought her a snake, he chased her around the yard with it and buried the second one.
“I do not know if he killed it,” said Newlin. “He was just carrying it in his mouth and never acted violent towards it. He did not seem to get bit either. I don’t know if something happened to [the snake] prior to him finding it because part of the tail was missing.”
The family’s other dog, a German shorthaired pointer named Grace, also brings family members things.
“The dogs are notorious for bringing us stuff,” laughed Newlin. “Scout in particular loves to bring us firewood for our wood pile, metal from our metal pile, he finds lots of bones to bring us, and tonight he found a skunk and was very proud of that as well. He has been seen playing with mice as well.”
“He also loves to chew and once chewed up an electrical cord and the wires on my husband’s trailer,” continued Newlin.
Several users on TikTok pointed out how happy Scout looked.
