Brazilian defender Vitor Reis has officially joined Man City from Palmeiras for 35 million euros.
Man City is facing serious problems in defense, greatly affecting Pep Guardiola’s tactics. The defending Premier League champion is currently ranked 5th on the rankings with only 11 wins in 20 matches, having conceded 29 goals.
Earlier this week, Man City announced the contract of Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens. And now, they continue to strengthen their defense with the addition of Reis. The Brazilian player signed a 4 and a half year contract with Man City, in an effort to improve Guardiola’s defense.
At the official launch, Reis shared: “I am very excited to join Manchester City, one of the biggest clubs in the world. Everyone has seen the team’s great achievements in recent seasons, and I want to make my own mark when conquering more titles with the team.
Working with Pep Guardiola is every young player’s dream, and I know he will help me develop to become the best version of myself. City also has a lot of experience working with Brazilian players, and being able to work side by side with Ederson and Savinho will be a big advantage for me.”
Meanwhile, Man City’s football director, Txiki Begiristain, also expressed satisfaction: “Vitor Reis is one of the most promising young defenders in the world, and we are delighted to be able to bring him on board. In his short time playing professionally in Brazil, Vitor has proven that he has the potential to go far in his career.
Working with Pep and our coaching team will certainly help him maximize his potential. Vitor possesses excellent ball control skills and is very strong in the air – these are necessary qualities to become one of the best defenders. Although he is very young, his quality is high enough to help the team now and in the long term future.”
Reis, dubbed the “new Marquinhos”, has officially surpassed Lucas Beraldo to become the most expensive Brazilian defender in history. Previously, PSG spent 20 million euros to recruit Beraldo from Sao Paulo in 2024.
Reis will likely not be in Guardiola’s squad for the Champions League match against PSG on January 23. However, Reis can make his debut for Man City in the big match against Chelsea in the Premier League on January 26.
