A group of three, consisting of a mother and her two young ones, were spotted heading towards the Chobe River in Botswana to quench their thirst. However, during their journey, the littlest calf stumbled multiple times before finally reaching the river.

The baby elephant was still wobbly and pink in color, indicating it had only been born a few hours ago. The mother elephant used her trunk and feet to help the newborn back on its feet after it stumbled near the water’s edge. Stools observed this heartwarming interaction between the two elephants for almost 40 minutes. To everyone’s surprise, the mother and her baby even crossed the river to reach one of the islands. Despite being a weak swimmer, the little one managed to swim all the way with only its trunk sticking out of the water.

According to the photographer, the baby calf appeared to be just a few hours old as it was still pink in color and unsteady on its feet.

As the baby approached the edge of the water, it took a few dips before being lifted back up by its mother. Witnessing this tender moment of a mother guiding her calf and then watching the little one swim was truly heartwarming, according to Stols.

Stols expressed his amazement at the sight of the youngest elephant he had ever laid eyes on, describing it as a truly unique moment. Although Chobe was home to a plethora of elephants, this one stood out among the rest. Witnessing the mother tenderly leading her calf, and even observing the little one swim, was a heartwarming experience for Stols. He couldn’t help but imagine the day he would see a mother elephant giving birth, but this encounter was already a dream come true.
