The community of Heart’s Delight in Newfoundland, Canada couldn’t turn away from the cries from help after a pod of dolphins became trapped in sea ice.
On March 10, 2023 residents saw over 20 dolphins stuck along the shoreline being “beaten up” by sea ice and rocks. The dolphins were crying out for help and Barb Parsons-Sooley was among the people who sprung into action to help save them.
People came with ATVs, backhoes and other vehicles along with ropes and other tools to help free the dolphins while others braved the frigid waters.
One family shared a video of what they saw after rushing down to see if there was anything they could do to help. The wife and mother wrote, “My husband, our children, and I decided to go see them to see if there was anything we could do to help.
When we arrived, the Department of Fisheries [of Canada] and some local citizens had already rescued a few of them. We stayed and watched while they rescued more.”
“Unfortunately, two passed away and two were transported by truck to a nearby community where there was no ice. The one in the video was one of the ones relocated to a nearby community,” she writes.
“The rest of the dolphins escaped the ice with a little help from the DFO and made their way to safety in the sea.”
