In a playful and awe-inspiring scene, dolphins were spotted engaging in a delightful interaction with an octopus, leaping high into the air and creating splashes as they played. The exuberant dolphin seemed to have the entire octopus in its mouth, only to toss it skyward, resulting in a spectacular display of splashing water.

These captivating moments were captured by Krista Nicholson in Mandurah, a picturesque coastal city in Western Australia. According to Nicholson, witnessing dolphins “tossing an octopus” is not uncommon, but capturing it on camera has been a challenging endeavor until now.

“This is something very rarely happens”

“This is a very rare occurrence,” she said.

“We’ve never seen dolphins eat octopus, but we’ve read that in some parts of the world they do play with octopus.”

Nicholson said she had never seen a dolphin eat an octopus

Nicholson is working on the Mandurah Dolphin Research project, which began in January, which includes tracking dolphin populations, habitat and genetics between dolphins.

They usually study in estuaries and coastal areas. Nicholson’s university has been studying bottlenose dolphins in the Bunbury and Perth areas for nearly a decade.
