In a heartwarming incident, a dog broke out of its kennel to comfort a litter of abandoned puppies that were crying.

A dog was caught on camera sneaking out of her pet motel kennel in a desperate attempt to cuddle with a pair of nine-week-old puppies. The Australian shepherd cross named Maggie had been put up for adoption and separated from her own litter of puppies just two weeks ago.

So when her new owners placed her at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming in St. Albert, Canada, her maternal instincts must have still been in high gear. She had already staying at Barker’s for about a week when the pet motel, which also houses rescue animals, brought in the puppies named Hannah and Kari.

Owner Sandra Aldred had gone to dinner with her family when she pulled up a live feed of the facility’s surveillance cameras and saw Maggie making a beeline for Hannah and Kari’s pen.

Aldred told CBC News: ‘She’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chainlink gate of their room. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her.’She suspects Maggie wriggled her way out of a small opening of her kennel’s door, made for holding a water dish, after she heard the pups crying.

Aldred returned to the facility, where she was greeted by an ecstatic Maggie. Aldred told the news channel: ‘She was really happy, and then she took me back to their room as if to say: “I really need to meet these puppies.”‘ Aldred opened the cage and watched as Maggie nuzzled the puppies and cuddled with them throughout the night.

Aldred said: ‘They were just all so happy to be together. The puppies needed her and she needed them. It was pretty perfect.’ Deanna Thompson of the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society said she wasn’t surprised by Maggie’s escape. She told ABC 11: ‘It’s innate in a lot of female dogs, especially if they’ve had a litter in the past. It’s just in their nature.

‘We’ve seen it even with male dogs, when they hear other puppies crying they want to console them and make sure they’re feeling safe.’ The love fest didn’t last, however, as Maggie’s owners came to pick her up the next day. The puppies have been spoiled by the staff at Barker’s, and are expected to be adopted in the next week. Source
