The three elephants were hit by an up light engine that had left Kampur railway station at around 4:50AM this morning.
The tragedy takes the death toll of elephants being killed on the railway lines during the month up to seven.
The trio were struck as the herd crossed the railway line returning to the forest just before sunrise, the Indian Express reports.
Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson, Jyoti Sharma said the accident occurred despite speed restrictions being introduced at various elephant crossing spots.
