Stories circulated online of a mysterious figure named Alfred Isaac Middleton. The man is said to be a remarkable explorer in the late 19th century who disappeared after searching for the ruins of the Dauritu city in the jungles of Sumatra.

In the late 19th century, British explorer Alfred Isaac Middleton traveled to the most remote corners of the world in search of fauna, flora and archaeological wonders. Photos help illuminate some incredible discoveries during a series of then-unknown missions across Southeast Asia, Africa and the Amazon rainforest.
According to Smithsonian Magazine, a former assistant to Arthur Conan Doyle and a friend of explorer Sir John Morris collected documents about Middleton, one of which revealed that the explorer ordered Incredible story.

Middleton is an explorer looking for a forgotten city called Daolitu, which is said to be on the way to Lop Nur Lake. Presumably, Middleton lost his way in that area. The email also mentions a treasure that Middleton is said to have found in the coffin.
According to the book “The Lost Coffin of Dawley Tull” published in 1881:
In search of one of the greatest lost treasures in the world, the quest discovers a city in the jungle called Dorito. According to Middleton, there is a map with a golden city that stretches down to a lake and a golden statue of a woman from a lost continent called Atlantis.
Middleton sent a group to find the city, and one of them is said to have found a buried coffin filled with gold. According to a letter found in church archives, Middleton got lost in the jungle and was captured by a group of men who wanted gold and statues, the report said. Middleton apparently died in captivity.

A man named John Hargreaves, said to be the second commander of the mission, led another team into the jungle in search of treasure. In the end, what happened to Middleton’s expedition is unknown.
Many mainstream historians consider Middleton’s story to be a hoax, and that Middleton’s mission to find Dowley Tull never happened. But many theorists are convinced that the expedition was real, but Middleton disappeared and never returned.

Did Alfred Middleton really discover a mythical city lost in time? If so, which mysterious civilization does this city belong to? What the hell happened to Middleton? Did he really get lost in the jungles of Sumatra, or did he deliberately not come back?
