In the heart of Botswana is the Elephant Rescue Centre, a sanctuary dedicated to the care and protection of these amazing creatures.
Here, the camera captured the remarkable relationship between humans and monsters, a moment that won the hearts of many. The incredible footage of Jabu, the gentle elephant, lying to a conservation worker with antibiotic drops in his eyes has become a testament to the trust and connection between humans and animals.
Jabu, the 31-year-old bull of the herd, has had a rough past. Orphaned in South Africa’s Kruger National Park during a culling operation, the elephant was rescued and taken to the Elephant Rescue Centre, where he has lived ever since. Despite a rough start, Jabu has managed to thrive under the careful care of his human companions. Standing at over 11.4 feet (3.5 meters) tall and weighing 5.5 tons, he is an impressive sight. However, Jabu is not without his challenges. In addition to his current eye infection, he also has to battle a wrist injury and osteoarthritis, both acquired after an encounter with a bison in 2016.
In the viral video, Jabu can be seen confidently striding across the sandy terrain of the Elephant Rescue Center south of his goalkeeper. The watchman calmly placed his hand on the giant’s leg and gently told Jabu to lie down.
“Jabu, lie down,” the keeper said in a soft voice.
Pausing for a moment, Jabu did exactly what was asked, flexing his hind legs to gracefully lower himself to the ground. The bond between the two is palpable, as Jabu fully trusts his human friend to help him.
The conservator carefully opened Jabu’s eyes, revealing areas of redness and irritation, and instilled antibiotics. When the ordeal ended, Jabu couldn’t help but gasp for an extra reward.
“Good boy, Jabu,” said the mahout, tossing the elephant a handful of nuts as a reward. “You did a great job.”
The worker patted Jabu’s trunk and started walking, letting him get to his feet.
“Okay, Jabu, you can get up now,” said the mahout, smiling at the elephant.
Jabu stood up, looking happy and relieved. The relationship between him and his manager is truly remarkable, a testament to the power trust and connection can make between humans and animals.
The intimate moment between Jabu and the watchman is not only heartwarming but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the precious relationship between humans and the natural world. The staff at the Elephant Rescue Center, run by Living With Elephants, continue to care for Jabu and the other members of the herd with devotion and compassion.
