The Magnificent Superfortress
You can hear the power of FIFI’s four Wright R-3350 radial engines at idle. We can all thank the CAF and its volunteers for FIFI’s restoration.
It took a lot of manpower to get this Superfortress up and running – after all, it wasn’t until the 70s when a CAF pilot discovered the aircraft.
This B-29 spent 17 years parked at a US Navy Weapons Center, spending its life as a target for gunnery tests while under the extreme conditions of the desert.
It underwent nine weeks of repairs before it was cleared to fly again. After restoration, it was featured in films such as “Enola Gay: The Men, The Mission, and the Atomic Bomb.”
Nowadays, FIFI tours the US and Canada annually while taking part in various airshows. Currently, it is one of two remaining airworthy B-29s in the world alongside “Doc.”
