Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti believes that the winner of the Champions League play-off tie between his side and Manchester City will go on to lift the trophy.

The two European heavyweights have clashed in the latter stages of the competition in each of the last three seasons, with the victor ultimately winning the Champions League.

Ancelotti expects this trend to continue, saying, “I am convinced the team that goes through from this tie will go on to win the competition.”

Ancelotti acknowledged that facing Manchester City is always a challenging task, praising City boss Pep Guardiola as “the best manager out there.”
He added: “It’s a nightmare preparing for games against him because he always has ideas that make you think.”

The first leg of the play-off tie takes place at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, with Ancelotti’s side looking to bounce back from a recent wobble in LaLiga.
Despite City’s indifferent form this season, Ancelotti remains wary of the threat they pose.
“They are one of the best teams in Europe… It’s the most difficult game we can face, regardless of form.”
