The people in charge of the improvised rescue were rowing on the Ebro River near Utebo, in the Spanish province of Zaragoza, when they saw the dog desperately clinging to a rock , its body half submerged under the water.
When they pulled him out of the water they discovered something really cruel. Its hind legs had been tied with industrial zip ties , so it was more than evident that the people behind this crime not only abandoned the pet, but were also very interested in it dying.
He was covered in mud and vegetation and suffered from serious eye infections . The lower half of her body was red and swollen and full of wounds, from having been submerged in water for many hours, if not days.
Lucio does not have a microchip and was found during the early hours of the night. It is likely that the dog’s owner tried to get rid of him due to his blindness and advanced age . The police immediately opened investigations to try to find those responsible for the crime.
Although Lucio managed to be physically stable, the Zaragoza Animal Protection Center wrote on its Facebook page that he continued to be apathetic, refusing to eat and appearing very scared .
Lucio needed psychological rehabilitation , so professional trainers came to Zaragoza to help him. He was able to stand and walk, which was a good sign regardless.
The dog was moved to a place with open space where he does not feel overwhelmed and can regain trust in people and other animals , to begin a new chapter in his life after this bitter ordeal.
Now the dog is recovering in a peaceful place.
