Transfermarkt recently released an eye-opening graphic calculating how much Europe’s top clubs have spent on defenders over the past five years.
Leading the pack is Chelsea, who shelled out a staggering €391 million on 13 defenders — averaging about €30 million per player.
Real Madrid, meanwhile ranks a surprising 236th on the list, having made only three defensive signings — Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Fran Garcia — with a total outlay of just €5 million paid to Rayo Vallecano for the latter.

That figure looks set to change this summer as Real Madrid prepare to revamp its defensive line.
