At just nine days old, a tiny foal named Tye lost his mother. But on the same heartbreaking night, he gained an unexpected friend who refused to leave him alone.
That friend was Zip, a five-year-old Australian cattle dog.
Zip had never shown much interest in the horses on the property before. Although his family raised foals every year, he would usually just glance at them before going about his business.
But everything changed when Tye’s mother became seriously ill.
The mare had fallen sick only days after giving birth. Despite receiving treatment, her condition quickly deteriorated. As the situation became increasingly serious, Tye’s owner, Karla Swindle, stayed at the barn through the night, caring for the mother and her newborn foal.
Zip followed her, as he always did.
But this time, the rescue dog seemed to understand that the tiny foal needed company.
While Swindle cared for Tye’s mother, the newborn foal lay in the barn aisle. Instead of wandering away, Zip settled down beside him and stayed there throughout the night.
The little foal had just lost the one animal he depended on most. Yet in the darkness of that difficult night, he wasn’t completely alone.
Zip simply lay beside him, offering the kind of quiet companionship that Tye desperately needed.
No one had taught the dog to become a guardian to a newborn horse. He had never seemed particularly interested in the foals before.
But somehow, on the night Tye needed someone most, Zip knew exactly where he belonged.
