A six-month-old koala named Phantom refused to leave his injured mother’s side, even as she underwent life-saving surgery after being hit by a car.
Phantom’s mother, Lizzy, was struck by a vehicle on Australia’s Warrego Highway, suffering severe facial trauma and a collapsed lung. She was rushed to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, where veterinarians began treating her serious injuries.
But Lizzy wasn’t alone.
Her tiny joey remained close throughout the ordeal, clinging to his mother while she was unconscious. The heartbreaking sight showed just how strong the bond between a mother koala and her dependent baby can be.
At around six months old, Phantom was still at an age when he would normally spend much of his time with his mother. Baby koalas remain in their mother’s pouch during their first months of life and continue depending on her well beyond that stage.
For Phantom, his mother was more than just a source of food and shelter—she was his entire world.
As veterinarians worked to save Lizzy, the little joey stayed close, seemingly unwilling to let go of the mother he depended on.
Both mother and baby were eventually recovering at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, founded by the late conservationist Steve Irwin and his wife, Terri.
After everything they had been through, the image of Phantom clinging to his recovering mother offered a small but powerful reminder of the bond between a mother and her baby.
For this tiny koala, the most important thing in the world was simply being beside Mom.
