After spending 25 years as a circus bear, Toshka is finally experiencing something he rarely knew during his long life in captivity: simple moments of peace.
The elderly bear spent most of his life performing tricks for audiences before being transferred to a sanctuary in Satanov, Ukraine, for rehabilitation and lifelong care.
Now, instead of performing for crowds, Toshka has discovered a much simpler pleasure.
In a touching video filmed on August 26, the elderly bear can be seen sitting peacefully in a sunny patch among trees and bushes while enjoying one of his regular showers.
According to his caretaker, these sunny showers have quickly become Toshka’s favorite pastime.
Ukraine’s summer temperatures can reach around 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35°C), making cool water particularly welcome for a bear covered in thick fur. Toshka has two layers of fur that help protect him from the cold, but during hot summer days, a refreshing shower offers a welcome break from the heat.
His new life is a world away from the circus environment where he spent most of his years.
For the first time in decades, Toshka no longer has to perform for an audience. Instead, his days can be filled with sunshine, water, rest and the freedom to simply behave like a bear.
It may seem like a small thing, but watching Toshka peacefully enjoying his favorite shower represents something much bigger: after a quarter-century of captivity, this elderly bear finally has time to enjoy the little things.
