For a group of rescued baby owls, the moment they finally returned to the wild was almost too beautiful to believe.
When orphaned screech owls arrive at Austin Wildlife Rescue, caregivers first try to reunite them with their original families whenever possible. But when that isn’t an option, the tiny owlets are given another chance to grow up safely alongside other young owls of the same age.
According to animal care manager Kathryn Mattison, grouping babies together helps create a family-like environment where they can develop and learn important skills.
The owlets initially spend time in incubators while they are still fragile. As they grow stronger, they are moved into flight enclosures where they can exercise, build their wings and practice flying.
Eventually, the day comes when they are ready to leave captivity behind.
Recently, one rescued owl family was released onto a 15-acre wooded property in Elgin, Texas. The carrier was placed down, the door opened—and the young owls suddenly found themselves looking at a vast forest that would become their new home.
After spending so much of their early lives being cared for by humans, the sight before them must have been extraordinary. Trees stretched out in every direction, offering the freedom they had been preparing for.
And as the owls emerged from their carrier, their reaction made the moment even more special. They seemed to pause as if taking in their new world for the very first time.
For these once-vulnerable babies, it was finally time to spread their wings.
