A routine drive along a secluded mountain road turned into an unexpectedly adorable wildlife encounter when a Colorado sheriff’s deputy came face-to-face with a curious baby owl.
The deputy was driving near the small town of Nederland with a colleague when they spotted a young northern saw-whet owl along a woodland road. Instead of immediately flying away, the tiny bird appeared completely unfazed by the approaching officers.
Body-camera footage captured the deputy walking toward the owl and casually asking, “Hi, what’s up?” The little bird responded with a series of clicks, creating a remarkably charming exchange between the officer and her unexpected feathered visitor.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office later shared the encounter, saying the young owl and the deputy both seemed equally curious about each other. The bird even appeared to engage in a little head-twisting contest with the officers before eventually taking flight.
The encounter happened near Rainbow Lakes Campground, a few miles northwest of Nederland. However, officials deliberately chose not to reveal the exact location.
There was a good reason for keeping the spot secret: protecting the owl’s nest. By limiting details about where the bird was found, authorities hoped to prevent unnecessary disturbance around its nesting area.
After its brief interaction with the officers, the young owl safely flew away—leaving behind a body-camera moment that was anything but ordinary.
