After years of being forced to perform in circuses, elephants Mia and Sita finally arrived at a place where they could live without chains.
The two elephants were transported more than 1,200 miles to the Elephant Conservation and Care Center run by Wildlife SOS in Mathura, India. Their journey took place day and night, through heavy rain, as rescuers worked to bring them to safety.
When they finally arrived, Mia and Sita were entering a completely different chapter of their lives.
Years of being chained for long periods had taken a serious toll on both elephants. Their health problems included painful joints, and there were times when they could not even lie down to sleep properly. According to Wildlife SOS, Sita had reportedly gone as long as a year without experiencing a full rest.
After reaching the sanctuary, however, the two elephants appeared noticeably happier.
For the first time, they could move without being restrained and would no longer be forced to perform for crowds. Instead, they could receive the medical care and rest their aging bodies desperately needed.
Wildlife SOS co-founder Kartick Satyanarayan said the elephants seemed to sense that a happier life was ahead of them—a life where their painful joints could finally rest.
After spending years being treated as performers, Mia and Sita had finally reached somewhere they could simply be elephants.
Their freedom did not erase the suffering they had endured, but it gave them something they had been denied for far too long: the chance to rest, heal and live without chains. ❤️🐘
