At the Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery, Dr. Roxy Danckwerts and her team tried to comfort the orphaned calf with blankets, gentle voices and soothing care. But nothing seemed to calm her.

Then came a simple idea: warmth and the feeling of being held.

The calf was wrapped in a soft cotton cover, snug enough to provide a comforting sense of touch. Gradually, the trembling stopped. The frightened elephant relaxed and finally settled down to sleep.

The story of the little elephant’s “pajamas” later captured people’s hearts online. While the pajamas themselves may be more symbolic than a formal medical treatment, the underlying principle reflects an important part of caring for orphaned elephants: warmth, gentle contact and reassurance can help distressed calves feel secure.

At the Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery, orphaned elephants receive care after losing their families to poaching and other threats. Their recovery involves far more than treating physical injuries. Human caregivers also provide companionship, patience and a safe environment as the young elephants begin rebuilding their lives.
