For years, Caesar the brown bear knew only darkness, confinement and unimaginable pain. Today, she spends her days swimming in the sunshine, climbing and exploring grassland—a remarkable transformation after being rescued from a bear bile farm in China.
Caesar spent much of her early life trapped inside a tiny cage with barely enough room to move. An open wound on her side was used to drain bile from her gallbladder, which was collected for use in traditional medicine.
But her suffering did not end there.
Caesar was forced to wear a metal device known as a “torture vest.” Strapped around her abdomen, the heavy contraption helped keep a catheter in place while collecting the bile in a metal container.
When Animals Asia rescued Caesar from a bear farm in Tianjin, she was understandably distressed. The organization’s founder, Jill Robinson, recalled seeing the frightened bear violently bouncing inside her rusty cage during the rescue.
Everything changed after Caesar arrived at Animals Asia’s sanctuary in Chengdu.
Instead of spending her days trapped in darkness, she could finally experience the things that had been denied to her for so long. She discovered sunshine, open spaces and the simple joy of swimming.
Caesar also began digging, climbing and running through the grass—natural behaviors she had once been unable to express.
Her rescue could not erase the years she spent suffering, but it gave her something precious: the freedom to finally enjoy the life she had been denied.
And Caesar has spent years making the most of every moment. ❤️🐻
