Elephant Tiny Is Finally Freed From Chains After 55 Years

For 55 years, an elephant named Tiny lived with chains wrapped around his body, forced to haul heavy logs through the forests of Thailand.

For decades, elephants were used in Thailand’s logging industry to move enormous tree trunks. Although the practice is now mostly banned, some elephants have continued to suffer under dangerous working conditions.

Tiny’s life was particularly heartbreaking. His handlers reportedly used sharp spears to force him to obey, while his poor diet left him severely malnourished. His spine was visible beneath his skin, and the sides of his head had become deeply sunken.

Then animal advocates at Planting Peace learned about Tiny.

They contacted his owners and began negotiating for his freedom. Eventually, the owners agreed to give Tiny up if Planting Peace could raise enough money to replace him with a tractor.

It was a difficult challenge, but Planting Peace turned to social media and asked people around the world to help fund Tiny’s rescue.

After 55 years of being treated as a tool for labor, Tiny finally had a chance at something he had never truly known: freedom.

His story is a painful reminder of the suffering endured by working elephants—and a powerful example of how determined people can give an animal a second chance at life.

For Tiny, the hope was no longer to survive another day in chains. It was finally to live without them.
