Koko the gorilla became famous around the world for her remarkable ability to communicate using sign language. But one of the most touching chapters of her life came when she was given an unexpected birthday gift — two tiny kittens.
For her 44th birthday, Koko was presented with a box full of kittens and allowed to choose two of them to become her companions. The remaining kittens were placed in loving homes.
Living at the Gorilla Foundation in Redwood City, California, Koko was cared for by her trainer, Francine Patterson. According to Patterson, Koko could understand thousands of English words and communicate with her caregivers using hundreds of signs.
Koko’s connection with cats was especially meaningful. She had previously formed a close bond with a kitten named All Ball. When All Ball died, Koko reportedly expressed her grief through sign language, showing just how deeply she had cared for her little companion.
So when the two new kittens entered her life, Koko appeared to embrace them with the same tenderness.
The sight of a giant gorilla carefully caring for tiny kittens was incredibly heartwarming. Despite their enormous differences in size and species, Koko and her feline companions formed a bond built on affection and companionship.
