A familiar face has returned to the Bay Area for one final moment in Scarlet and Gold.
At 34 years old, a former San Francisco quarterback has signed a ceremonial one-day contract with the 49ers, allowing him to officially retire with the franchise that defined the most important years of his NFL career.
The honorary agreement does not include a roster position, salary or playing commitment. It is instead a symbolic reunion between the veteran quarterback, the organization and the fan base that supported him through playoff victories, painful injuries and one of the most dramatic periods in recent franchise history.
His return follows a devastating sequence of events that abruptly ended his attempt to continue playing.
A FINAL OPPORTUNITY DISAPPEARS
According to the fictional scenario, the quarterback had reached a preliminary agreement with a new team that viewed him as an experienced backup and mentor for its younger players.
That opportunity disappeared after medical examinations revealed that a lingering lower-body injury had deteriorated beyond what doctors considered safe for an NFL return.
The club declined to complete the agreement after determining that he would not receive medical clearance to play.

He then held up a red 49ers jersey bearing his familiar No. 10 before posing for photographs inside the team facility.
There would be no comeback announcement and no suggestion that another opportunity might eventually appear.

But the one-day contract allowed Garoppolo to make one last decision for himself.
