“There’s truth to that stuff, we’ve had discussions,” Joe Pavelski told Curtis Pashelka of the Bay Area News Group. “I’m excited to go through the process and kind of see where it leads.”
That simple statement may have sounded harmless on the surface, but across the hockey world, it immediately sparked a fascinating conversation.
Could one of the most respected players of his generation really be preparing for an NHL head coaching opportunity?
And more importantly, could the Toronto Maple Leafs actually be considering a move bold enough to change the direction of the franchise?
Pavelski, who officially retired from professional hockey in July 2024, has never served as an NHL head coach, assistant coach, or front-office executive. According to Elite Prospects, he has no professional coaching experience at the NHL, AHL, or junior levels.
On paper, that alone would seem to remove him from consideration for one of the most demanding jobs in hockey.
Yet Toronto’s interest appears to suggest otherwise.
The Maple Leafs are one of the NHL’s most scrutinized organizations. Every decision is dissected. Every playoff exit becomes a national headline. Every coaching move carries enormous pressure.
Normally, teams facing those circumstances turn toward experienced bench bosses with long résumés and proven systems.
Pavelski represents the exact opposite.
His coaching experience consists primarily of guiding the Madison Capitols U-15 AAA team this past season, a team that included his son Nate. While valuable, that experience is far removed from managing NHL superstars, handling playoff pressure, and navigating the expectations of an Original Six franchise desperate to win its first Stanley Cup since 1967.
Naturally, critics have questioned whether such a leap would be too risky.
However, hockey fans have seen this story before.
And surprisingly, it worked.
Back in February 2022, the Montreal Canadiens stunned the league when they hired Martin St-Louis as head coach despite having virtually no high-level coaching experience.
At the time, many analysts viewed the move as reckless.
Before joining Montreal, St-Louis’ coaching background consisted mainly of working with his son Lucas and the Mid Fairfield Rangers U-13 AAA program.
There was no NHL coaching apprenticeship.
No years spent climbing the professional ranks.
No extensive tactical résumé.
Yet the Canadiens saw something beyond experience.
They saw leadership.
They saw communication.
They saw someone who understood the mindset of elite players because he had lived it himself.
The results have exceeded expectations.
Since arriving behind the Canadiens bench, St-Louis has transformed Montreal’s culture. Young players have developed faster than expected. Veterans have bought into the system. Most importantly, the organization has established a clear identity centered around accountability, confidence, and player growth.
Their remarkable playoff emergence in recent seasons has only strengthened the belief that unconventional hires can sometimes produce extraordinary results.
That’s exactly why Pavelski’s name cannot be dismissed so easily.
Throughout his playing career, Pavelski earned a reputation as one of hockey’s smartest players. He was never the fastest skater or the most physically dominant athlete. Instead, he built a Hall-of-Fame-caliber career through preparation, leadership, hockey IQ, and an ability to elevate teammates around him.
Former teammates consistently praised his professionalism.
Coaches trusted him.
Young players learned from him.
Those qualities often translate remarkably well behind the bench.
Toronto’s front office appears to understand that.
The organization has spent years pursuing traditional solutions. Elite stars. Veteran coaches. Major roster changes.
Yet the ultimate goal has remained frustratingly out of reach.
Perhaps that reality is forcing Leafs management to think differently.
Perhaps they are looking for someone capable of building a stronger connection with players rather than simply implementing systems.
Perhaps they see in Pavelski the same qualities Montreal saw in Martin St-Louis.
Of course, numerous experienced coaching candidates remain under consideration, and no decision appears imminent.
But the fact that conversations have reportedly taken place is significant in itself.
It suggests Toronto’s leadership is willing to challenge conventional thinking.
It suggests they are exploring ideas that many organizations would never seriously consider.
And perhaps most intriguingly, it suggests that one of hockey’s most respected former captains could be preparing for a second act nobody saw coming.
For now, Pavelski’s future remains uncertain.
But one thing is becoming increasingly clear:
The Maple Leafs are not simply searching for a coach.
They may be searching for a completely new vision.
