The truth behind his suffering was devastating. A crude explosive device — known locally as a “Hakka Patas,” meant to scare or injure wild animals — had detonated near his face when he wandered too close to farmland. The blast robbed him of his sight and left him scarred for life. Yet even through his blindness, he still responded gently to the voices of rescuers, reaching out with his trunk as if to say, “I’m still here.”
