“Tears of Patience”: Six months of confinement and enduring daily treatments — The painful, yet brave recovery of the little elephant calf! .HP

Ithumba, Kenya — Nearly six months have passed since the terrifying incident where the brave orphan elephant Enkikwe faced a brutal lion attack near the Kalovoto River. While his survival is a testament to the courageous protection from his fellow orphans, the cost was a severe leg injury.

The initial images of Enkikwe revealed persistent suffering: a small calf forced into near-immobility. For several months, he has been confined to his enclosure, unable to run and play. Every day, the care team diligently provides wound care, antibiotics, and healing green clay treatments.

Enkikwe’s recovery demands an extraordinary patience rarely seen in such a young creature. The brave calf has endured prolonged pain and discomfort. Even though his external wounds have fully healed, the deeper tragedy remains: Enkikwe is cautious, avoiding vigorous activities like mud baths to prevent further injury.

Veterinarians estimate an 18-month healing period for his knee, and the heartbreaking reality is that he is expected to have a permanent limp due to damaged ligaments and tendons. This means Enkikwe may never be able to run freely like other elephants in the wild.

However, with unwavering support from his companions and the dedicated care from the staff, Enkikwe is slowly adapting. The orphan calf is beginning to put more weight on his injured leg, showing noticeable improvement as he steps towards an “everyday life”.
