Suraj, a 45-year-old elephant, spent decades confined in a small, dark space at a temple in Maharashtra, India. Chained for years, he lived a life of neglect, his name—meaning “sun” in Hindi—standing in stark contrast to the darkness that surrounded him.
Temple visitors rarely saw him move freely, and his only companions were the heavy chains and the walls that enclosed him. The lack of space, exercise, and proper care took a visible toll on his health and spirit.
Recently, animal welfare groups intervened, rescuing Suraj from the temple. He is now under proper care, receiving medical attention and slowly adjusting to a life where freedom and sunlight replace chains and shadows.
